He wanted to shake hand with Feluda(The Detective character created by Satyajit Ray) – in the film Sonar Kella (The golden fort) , but his own hand was blessed with the divine blessing of Goddess Saraswati, so that he can enrich both Hindi and English Literature. Sidhu Jyetha may have been the character which can be equated with Google in that Pre – Internet age but Harindranath who played the character was no less than that. He not only gave words in the mouth of people from Sundi in the film Gupi Gayen Bagha Bayen(One more cult film by Satyajit Ray) but also gave words to many others lips. He is Harindranath Chattopadhyay. The Kulin Brahmin who was born in Hyderabad in 1898.We have only remembered him as Sidhu Jyetha (The older version of Google) or Magician Barfi in Satyajit Ray’s films but his identity as lyricist , musician , poet , Politician was no lesser than his acting talent.
Born in 2nd April 1898 in Hyderabad, his father was Aghornath Chattopadhyay, the first doctorate in Science for India . His mother was Baroda sundori who was also a poet and singer. Harindranath was the younger of the two sons and his sister Sarojini later became famous as Sarojini Naidu.
Harindranath who was born in such a family had to blossom as an exceptional poet who was later compared with Shelly and keats by the British Intellectuals.
Harindranath used to give the credit for all his creative works to that small child who was hiding inside him. His poems were very Rhythmic and his most popular creation was “Rail Gari” whch he sang in All India Radio in 1966. Later this was used by Hrishikesh Mukherjee in his movie Ashirbad sung by Ashok Kumar.
His Limerick was respected in Britain and his sonnet even got appreciated by Rabindranath Tagore . His most of the creations were in English and the song “My Heart is Beating” in the movie Julie was also created by him.
His first Book of Poetry “The Feast Of Youth” was published in 1918. He got married to Kamaladevi the next year and then went to Fitzwilliam College in Cambridge as a research Scholar. Subject of his research was Poet William Blake and his Poetries. During that period a lot of his creations were pubslied in British Journals and Magazines like Indian Magazine, Britain and India etc.
A few of his creations have been Magic Tree, Ancient wings , Blood of Stones , Spring in the winter , Shaper Shaped etc.
He first came to acting in 1962 in Saheb Biwi aur Gulam . Being the Ghadi Babu , he said Waqt Ki awaj Suno. The flow started after that. He sung a duet song with Ashok Kumar in Ashirbad . When Hrishikesh Mukherjee planned “Bawarchi” film , he could not think of anyone else than Harindranath for the head of the family character. Mentioning his acting talent would be incomplete with the characters of Sidhu Jyetha in Sonar kella , Magician Barfi in Gupi Gayen and Bagha Bayen and Sir Baren Roy in Seema Badhdha by Satyajit Ray.
His Family life was short-lived and Harindranath Divorce with his wife was the first divorce case in Indian court.
He was also into active politics and became the member of the parliament in 1951 from Vijayawada Constituency as Independent candidate supported by the CPI and was MP till 1957.
Harindranath had a child hidden inside him which he always pampered inside him . He never let his soul and mind grow old and had been evergreen. He got the Padma Bibhusan award in 1973. In 1990 23<sup>rd</sup> June he left this world and left behind his unending creative works. He was our Google in the pre internet age and now whenever we go back to google , it only reminds us of Sidhu Jyetha.
